Our reviews

A wonderful guesthouse.

Not too far from Husavik of you’re hoping to go wale watching or have a nice meal! Beautiful and comfortable rooms. Private bathrooms.

A small point, but something we really appreciated was the amazing breakfast buffet that was included with our stay! Nice selection of hot foods, cereals, meats, cheeses, bread, juices, coffee, spreads etc. Would highly recommend!

Greatest guesthouse around Mývatn!

Not at the Myvatn Lake itself (about 30′ drive), but a great location to visit the surroundings of the lake (direction Akureyri). Very large and extremely clean rooms, splendid breakfast and a small but wonderful menu for dinner. Highly recommended!

Convenient for surrounding exploration!

Close to the beautiful Godafoss, in Iceland horse country, is a fantastic B&B with clean, spacious rooms and baths, hot-tub, horses and delicious breakfasts of pancakes, eggs, toasts/breakfast bread, fruit, yoghurts/cereals, juices, coffee (all types), deli meats and cheeses. We stayed here and day tripped to Husavik, Dettifoss, Asbyrigis Canyon, Hafragilsfoss, Lake Myrvatn, Akureyri. Great B&B!!

Location and Surroundings

Stóru Laugar is located centrally in the tourist area of North Iceland and 64 km from Akureyri, the capital of the north. The guesthouse is close to Laugar, a small settlement in a green and warm countryside, which divides into low heaths and shallow valley slopes. The location is well-suited for day trips around the area where you will find some of Iceland’s most famous natural attractions.

Lake Mývatn area
Lake Mývatn and its surroundings are a unique world, famous for natural beauty and stunning landscapes. Lake Mývatn is located 27 km from Stóru-Laugar. In the area, you will find natural attractions like Dimmuborgir, Hverfjall, Hverarönd and Námafjall. After an eventful day, you can enjoy a relaxing time in the Mývatn Nature Baths before driving back to the guesthouse.
Húsavík town - whale watching
Húsavík town is located 40 km from Stóru-Laugar guesthouse. It’s known as the whale watching capital of Iceland and is, therefore, an ideal place to stop if you want to see and photograph the largest mammals in the world. Húsavík has daily whale watching cruises on the fjord and an exhibition about whales and their habitat.
Dettifoss waterfall has the greatest volume of any waterfall in Europe, 500 cubic metres of water per second plunge over its edge. The waterfall is 45 m high and 100m wide. A nice hiking trail, 34km, goes along the canyon from Dettifoss to Asbyrgi. Dettifoss is located 120 km from Stóru-Laugar.
A gigantic, horseshoe-shaped rock formation, Ásbyrgi stands guard next to the northern entrance to the 35 km Jokulsa Canyon. With geological wonders such as Hljóðaklettar inside, the Jokulsá Canyon forms one of the most admired walking destinations in the country.

Inside Ásbyrgi there is anything from 30 minutes to 7-hour hiking trails.  Walk across the canyon floor and enjoy the honeycombed basalt rocks, or traverse the cliffs and marvel at the sheer scale of the rock formation itself. The most adventurous routes involve both, clambering up cliff passages on a series of ropes.

Ásbyrgi is located 100 km from Stóru-Laugar, or around 1 hour and 20 minutes by car.
